Alpha II is a TDSB alternative school built on two core pillars: self-directed learning and consensus-based community decision-making. Teens choose and pursue their own learning based on their interests, build personal portfolios instead of earning grades, and are expected to focus on their own growth rather than evaluating others. Shared space and resources are managed through weekly Friday Mentee Meetings, where students raise issues and develop solutions together using consensus, and monthly Community Meetings, where parents, mentors, and students discuss school-wide values and policies. The school relies on respectful collaboration, parent involvement, and a commitment to honouring each individual’s needs and values while building a functioning, student-driven community.

The Parent Community Council (PCC) supports Alpha II’s two pillars by strengthening the parent side of the community. The PCC helps coordinate parent involvement, organizes workshops and events, and ensures families stay informed and connected. It works in partnership with students and mentors—always through the lens of self-directed learning and consensus—to provide practical support, share skills, and nurture the collaborative culture that makes Alpha II work.
Alpha II’s year is filled with events that celebrate learning, creativity, and community. Portfolio Nights showcase students’ projects and personal work, from art and writing to performances and videos, giving the community a chance to see and appreciate their accomplishments. The Coffee House is a festive end-of-year celebration with performances, displays of student-made work, and shared food. Families also connect informally through the summer picnic, and parents sometimes gather for pub nights to socialize and build connections. These events highlight the school’s focus on self-directed learning, community engagement, and the joy of sharing achievements with others.
